Our sister company had its app MYAndroidProtection reviewed on Danish TV!
This week we had our antivirus app MYAndroidProtection recommended by the gadget expert David Guldager on Danish TV.

Fake apps drain your account!
Smartphone owners are now encouraged once again by security consultants to improve the security on their phones. A raise in fake apps that secretly sends text messages to expensive phone numbers can be a costly affair that is often only detected when the phone bill has skyrocketed.
The warning appears in the report released last week by the British independent security site Get Safe Online, a collaboration between British police, government and the security industry. In a short time there has been an increase in fake apps that resemble trustworthy and familiar applications, but are designed to send text messages to expensive fares without the consent of the user. So far the majority of the apps have been security software and free versions of popular games. But that's just the beginning since the scammers have only just become aware of the huge potential of the smartphone market.
Rik Ferguson, security consultant and director of GetSafeOnline.org, explains:
"This type of malware is able to send a steady stream of messages to expensive SMS numbers - sometimes every minute. The charges against six pounds (60 dollars, Ed.) can be an extremely good business. Smartphone owners do not realize that this takes place, although it may happen while they use the phone as it takes place inside the phone infrastructure. "
Also security expert Janus R. Nielsen, co-founder of the mobile security company www.MYMobileSecurity.com, that makes antivirus apps for smartphones, is following the developments in the industry closely. He says: "It does not surprise me that fraudsters are increasingly embracing smartphones. It is a lucrative and relatively new market, where security is still poor, particularly on Android phones.”
He concedes that it can be difficult to spot whether an app is credible or not, but at the same time he gives some suggestions on what to be aware of to avoid being scammed:
"Before you download an app on your phone, check first that it comes from a credible source. Do some research on the net about the author of the app first. Additionally, you must regularly keep an eye on your phone bill, preferable every month so you can quickly respond if it increases dramatically. Another clue that there may be malware on the phone is if the battery starts draining faster than normal. In addition, it is a good idea to install a good antivirus program on the phone, so you can avoid the known malicious programs. There is already a range of good security solutions on the market, which can be downloaded from Android Market. I can recommend Netqin Antivirus or our own MYAndroidProtection/MYMobileProtection that have all received various “best in test” within the industry”, ends Janus R. Nielsen.

Google launches new website about staying safe on the Internet
The importance of staying safe on the internet is gaining more and more awareness. Being the world´s largest search engine, Google has decided to take an active part in making people more prepared to face the privacy and security threats online. Therefore, they have just launched a new campaign called Good to Know. It’s a site with a practical guide that teaches you how to stay safe while navigating the web.
”In the past few years, we’ve tried to make it easier for our users to learn about staying safe online by equipping them with a variety of tools through our Privacy, Security, and Family Safety centers. The new Good to Know website builds on this commitment by explaining things in simple language. The in-depth resources are still there, but we hope a one-stop-shop resource will make this information more accessible for everyone”, writes Google´s Privacy Policy Counsel in a company blog.
MYSecurityCenter´s IT-manager Tomas Bartkus is positive about the new initiative. He says: “I recommend the Good to Know site to everyone that is concerned about Internet safety. Do you trust your apps on your smartphone?
MYSecurityCenters associated company MYMobileSecurity has made some interesting comments on a recent report about smartphone apps that collect too much personal data. Read more here….
Too much unnecessary personal data is collected when you download apps on your smartphone. This was concluded by a report released last week from the Norwegian Data Inspection. The Danish-Swedish software company behind anti-virus App My Mobile Protection calls for clear rules in this area and also calls for action in relation to filling in the massive hole that exits when it comes to safety in general of smartphones.
Data Protection concludes: Your apps abuse your trust
The Norwegian Data Inspection published on 15th of September the report, "What does an app know about you?" based on a study of 20 Norwegian and 20 foreign apps for smartphones with Google's Android operating system. The conclusion was clear: the app-user is not sufficiently informed about what information should be collected about him, for what purpose and how the data will be treated.
Lack of rules harm consumers
This conclusion does not surprise the company MYMobileSecurity, that sells security software for smartphones, having more than 3 million users worldwide. "My assessment is that most apps collect more personal information than they need," says Janus R. Nielsen, co-founder of MYMobileSecurity. "They do this for two simple reasons: firstly because personal data is worth money. By collecting data on all customers, manufacturers can ensure a database of contacts that they may need for future products and updates. Secondly, they do it because they can. The market for smartphone apps is growing fast, but it's still a fairly new market. Consequently, there are yet no clear international rules and standards for what is allowed and what is not. Combining unclear rules of the enormous revenue opportunities, we get these kind of Wild West conditions we see today, "says Janus R. Nielsen.
Thousand pounds spent on virtual strawberries
Gross examples from the uncontrolled app market is not hard to find. "Think of Apple's iTunes store, that requires you to open an account with your credit card. It should be an option, not a requirement. Through your account, your child can just in a few minutes and with a few clicks spend a thousand pounds on virtual strawberries or teddy bears. I think it is ethically irresponsible, "says Janus R. Nielsen. He does not like the strategy of cheating money and information out of innocent people. However, he admits, that as long as it is being allowed, the app companies will try to obtain as much data as possible about users. Even if that information is not being used.
Soon we will get the black lists
He believes it is only a matter of time before we see the adoption of a series of international rules designed to protect the consumers. And when these rules come into force, the security companies will begin to integrate so-called "blacklists" of their security programs. "It will mean that when you try to install an app that does not comply with the rules or is already blacklisted, you will, through your phones security system, be warned before you approve the app. It is therefore important that you install a security program on your smartphone, "says Janus R. Nielsen.

I have not yet been exposed by a hacker attack (at least as far as I know).
Actually, I have no plans to allow myself to be exposed to hacker attacks, especially not when my bank later this year gets its act together to create a banking application for my Android phone. I already log on at the moment to various web pages with a username and password - something I obviously do not want to enable others to access. To be honest, I don't want to leave my smartphone wide open for a money-hungry SMS service that leaves an empty hole in my bank account. Therefore, it seems obvious to install an antivirus and security program such as MYAndroid Protection on my Android devices. This application can be downloaded, from amongst others, Android Marketplace and installed quite easily. After a few initial clicks, a little icon in the corner of the screen appears to show that real-time monitoring of the device is underway.
The product scans everything on your phone, not only applications. The strength of this antivirus program is that it really is easy to use, also for novice users. There are a limited number of options within the main centre and the layout is simple and intuitive. Also, you do not have to worry that the program might absorb a lot of power from the phone. On the list of functions that use up battery-life on my smartphone, MYAndroid Protection has not yet been listed as one of them.

In the future it will be much more attractive for hackers to go after smartphone users, since it is easier to milk a mobile subscription for money than a computer. Android magazine met with Danish Janus Nielsen and Swedish Kevin Freij, who are behind anti-virus company MYMobileSecurity.
Mobile viruses have been spoken about for several years - now comes the big attack on smartphones. So far, very few have experienced a virus on their smartphone or to have it hacked by malicious hackers but there is no doubt that mobile viruses eventually will spread - especially for smartphones, assesses Danish Janus Nielsen and Swedish Kevin Freij, owners of company MYMobileSecurity.
In the old PC days, the PC connected to the network via a modem, therefore hackers could hack into the computer and then connect it up to the network via, for example, a Kenyan server, so it would cost the user 50 dollars per minute to be connected. Nowadays there is reasonable control of PC security but with smartphones being more widespread, it has become much more interesting to hack a smartphone rather than a computer, especially since smartphones connect up in several different ways, for example Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth. But as I said, very few have been hit, so why now have a security application on our smartphone?
"We will use our smartphones and tablets for all the things we use our PCs to: Bank stock- purchase plans, filing of documents, images, video, personal information and so on. We log into all sorts of websites with usernames and passwords. Maybe there are not so many threats yet but they will come and much faster than we saw on PCs. It becomes much more attractive for hackers to go after smartphones in the near future" explains Kevin Freij.
What are the threats right now?
"They are classic, like "just" walking in and destroying the phone, we are already seeing viruses that can take all the contact information you have on your phone or perhaps usernames and passwords which you use to log onto websites. But right now we are seeing viruses that go after pure cash by sending expensive premium SMS from your account. It is much easier to steal money from one mobile subscription than from a PC" says Kevin Freij. He explained that in a country like Denmark where many Premium-users exist, one is more exposed to this kind of virus than for example users in Asia or Latin America. Even though it is typically from these geographic areas that the virus spreads. "In Denmark, people download many applications, use Premium Services with Credit card information and use the web frequently via the phone. It is a delicious cocktail for hackers" adds Janus Nielsen.
How do viruses enter the cell phone?
"Viruses today are not simple but very complicated. They can come as Trojans, with backdoors. They hide in applications (which we recently saw a preview of in the game Angry Birds, which was persuaded to buy extra tracks to the game but was actually a virus hidden in the app, ed.). Mobile Viruses can be very hard to erase from the phone once they have been installed via smart hackers. One can believe that the virus has been deleted from the phone but in reality it remains in the system" explains Kevin Freij.
It's still only very few people who have antivirus on their smartphone. Does it take a horror story to convince a broad range of users to install an antivirus on their cell phone and to take the threat seriously?
"In the last 10-15 years we have been taught from the PC side of things that we need security on our computers so it's going to be a faster transition this time to reach the full understanding" says " Kevin Freij. "But it is clear that if there were to be a horror story about a large scale virus that affects many people, then it would raise awareness about the need for antivirus on a mobile. It is human nature: If there isn't a problem, we don't bother to protect ourselves but when problems do occur, then we do it… Even if it's a little late" says Kevin, who firmly believes that one should be ahead of the obvious problem, instead of waiting until the one is hit with a serious virus.
Janus, you are Danish and Kevin you are Swedish, how come you have your HQ in Spain?
"Because we like the sun and playing golf!" is the instant answer from Janus Nielsen, who you can see is speaking honestly. So they do just that, what so many of us wish and dream for, work in the sun close to the golf course.
But how about customer support then?
"We offer customer support in local languages in the countries we operate in. The customer will initially try to solve any problems that may arise themselves either on the Web or via e-mail but if the problem can't be addressed in a second or two, then we move into a dialogue over the phone - obviously also in local languages" says Janus Nielsen. He explains that mobile manufacturers and operators simply demand customer support in local languages so this is an obvious service they offer: "It's something our competitors cannot offer as a service right now. We also believe that a security product should offer more than just an antivirus, therefore, we also offer backup, anti-theft and all those kind of important features. We want to offer the full range of features within security. It is easier for operators and manufacturers but even more so, it is easier for the individual users who can get all the security features from one place" says Janus Nielsen.
